Jean Ribière is a prominent French photojournalist of the 20th century, renowned for his humanist reportage on post-war France, rural life, popular traditions, and the daily life of the French regions.
He began at the newspaper L’Indépendant des Pyrénées-Orientales in 1940 before founding with his wife Micheline Vialle the agency “Ribière Presse Photos.” Their reports were published in numerous international outlets such as Paris Match, L’Express, or the BBC.
Jean Ribière was also actively involved in defending photographers’ rights, notably within the A.N.J.R.P.C., alongside figures like Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Raymond Depardon.
His photographic collection, preserved by his daughter Hélène Tabès, comprises about 120,000 photographic documents spanning the period 1941-1989.
