Moeder en kind, an oil painting by Bernard de Hoog (1866–1943) from the Netherlands, in the Romanticism style, measuring 80 cm by 65 cm, signed, original edition, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Beautiful work in wonderful condition .. Canvas 66x51 .. Magnificently framed and very well lit by De Hoog. Particularly beautiful light!
Until 1899, Bernard de Hoog lived and worked in Amsterdam, where he attended the Quellinusschool and subsequently apprenticed with John Frederik Hulk and Jan van Essen. In 1899 he settled in Laren, where he remained until 1902. Thereafter he lived and worked successively in Haarlem, Bussum and The Hague. The typical themes of the Larense School, more especially peasant interiors, would continue to define his oeuvre even after his departure from Laren. He often painted mothers with children. His style was strongly influenced by the Hague School painters Jozef Israëls and Albert Neuhuys, as well as Hein Kever. Moreover, his work, particularly in its use of clair-obscur, shows a thorough study of the old masters, especially Pieter de Hooch and Rembrandt.
Besides interiors, De Hoog also painted portraits, genre scenes, landscapes and flower still lifes. He also produced lighter watercolors. His work was very popular in America, Canada and England, where he frequently exhibited and sold a lot. He died in 1943, aged 77.
The frame is supplied free of charge and is not part of the warranty if shipped.
