“Before the Haar” evokes the stillness just before a sea mist rolls in, with cool layers of turquoise, ultramarine and deep blue dissolving into soft, atmospheric whites. Vertical drips and blurred edges suggest distant forms disappearing into fog, while flashes of pink and magenta punctuate the surface like buoys or lights cutting through the haze. The painting was created in the artist’s Irish studio in 2026 as part of a body of work responding to North Atlantic weather and the shifting visibility along the coast.

Lucy Birch is an abstract painter based on the west coast of Ireland. Trained in graphic design and later in product and furniture design, she spent years working in other fields before returning to her creative practice in her forties. Her work is intuitive and bold, acrylics on canvas shaped by the Atlantic landscape, its light, weather and coastline. She layers colour and transparency to build depth, leaving the history of each painting visible in its surface.
