Ilir Zefi, born in Mirditë (Albania) in 1963, is a contemporary painter active between Albania and Italy. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana, he moved to Rome in the early Nineties, developing a painting research oriented toward gestural and material abstraction. In the course of his career he has exhibited in international galleries and institutions across Italy, Europe and the United States, also participating in the XIV Quadriennale di Roma. His works have appeared at auctions and fairs dedicated to international contemporary art.
“The runner” effectively represents Zefi's painting language, characterized by strong gestural energy and an intense and layered chromatic construction. The painting surface develops through contrasts of deep grays, black, electric blue and copper/orange accents, producing a dynamic abstract composition with strong visual impact. The work recalls the European Informal tradition and contemporary action painting, while maintaining a strong personal identity. The painting matter, free and gestural, gives the canvas an elegant, contemporary and highly decorative presence.
