Description from the seller
Descriptive Sheet: Romano Mussolini, "Ship in a Storm" (1971)
The proposed work is an oil painting on canvas by Romano Mussolini created in 1971, entitled "Ship in a Storm." The painting belongs to the artist's mature period and is distinguished by a pictorial approach that favors dynamism and chromatic density over the figurative definition of details.
The composition is structured along a strong diagonal axis that traverses the painting from left to right, simulating the tilt of a vessel among the waves. The palette is characterized by the juxtaposition of dark, cool tones, such as black and deep green, interrupted by patches of reddish brown in the upper part. The element of the waves is rendered through the use of lead white (biacca) laid on with textural and rapid brushstrokes, creating a sharp contrast with the shadowed areas beneath.
From a technical standpoint, the execution appears swift and gestural, with accumulations of color that give the surface a three-dimensionality. The artist's signature and the dating (1971) are placed legibly in the lower right corner, applied with white pigment.
The work is set in an ornate gilded wooden frame, completed by an inner neutral-toned canvas passe-partout. Overall, it presents in good conservation condition, preserving the integrity of the pigments and the original support structure.
