Oil on canvas painting titled “Vache au repos” by H. Raes (c.1900), Belgian School, depicting a cow resting in a meadow, framed in an ornate gold frame and sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Oil on canvas of Belgian school, dated circa 1900, signed H. Raes in the lower right corner. The work depicts a cow lying in a meadow, placed in the foreground and surrounded by soft, enveloping vegetation. The scene stands out for its simple composition, tranquil atmosphere, and evident connection to the European animal painting tradition and rural life of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The painting is part of the Belgian animalist landscape painting, a genre highly valued in the naturalist context of the time. Belgium, like France and the Netherlands, developed an important tradition of rural painting, focused on representing domesticated animals, countryside scenes, meadows, livestock, and rural environments. In this case, the artist concentrates attention on the animal figure, treated with sobriety and descriptive sensitivity.
From a stylistic point of view, the work shows a clear influence of European naturalism and 19th-century animal painting. The cow is depicted with careful modeling, attending to anatomy, body volume, and fur texture. The treatment of the background is more diffuse and atmospheric, with soft greens and light brushstrokes that place the figure in a natural setting without diminishing its prominence.
The composition is balanced and straightforward: the animal occupies the central area of the scene, lying on the grass, with its head slightly turned toward the viewer. This arrangement gives a sense of calm and closeness, very typical of intimate rural painting. The color palette, based on greens, ochres, earth tones, and golden hues, reinforces the natural feel and creates a serene atmosphere.
The work preserves a restrained, academic-naturalist quality, but with a gentle and decorative painting style. The contrasts between the warm fur of the animal and the surrounding vegetation add depth and visual richness, while the soft light contributes to the sense of repose and stillness.
The conservation status can be assessed in the photographs, which are part of the description. It is advisable to carefully review the images to evaluate the overall condition of the painting and the frame.
It is presented framed with an ornate gold frame of classical style, in keeping with the piece’s aesthetic. The frame is included as a gift along with the work.
A decorative piece and of collector’s interest, especially suitable for lovers of European animal painting, Belgian naturalism, rural scenes, and livestock motifs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
