Veiled in Crystal is a mixed media work built on canvas in multiple layers — a photographic collage portrait overlaid with black tulle, then covered face by face, contour by contour, in hundreds of individually placed faceted glass crystals and rhinestone chains. Two holographic optical discs flank the figure like mirrors, or like halos. The effect is simultaneously sacred and contemporary — an icon built not from gold leaf but from light-refracting glass.
The process was entirely manual. Each crystal was placed by hand, following the architecture of the face beneath — the brow, the eyes, the mouth, the collar — so that the jewelled surface does not obscure the portrait but amplifies it. The tulle creates a layer of shadow and texture between the photograph and the crystals, giving the face a quality of depth and mystery that a flat surface could not achieve.
The result is a work that sits at the intersection of portraiture, jewellery, and devotional art — a contemporary icon for a world that worships beauty and knows it.
