Description from the seller
Basket for documents / magazine basket in bamboo and rush
– Italy 1940s-1950s
Attributed to Vittorio Bonacina
Elegant and refined multipurpose basket in woven bamboo and rush, an authentic expression of postwar Italian taste and Lombard artisanal excellence tied to the processing of natural materials. The sinuous line, the light yet solid structure, and the geometrical weave made entirely by hand make this object a perfect example of Italian decorative design between the 1950s and 1960s.
The piece features a curved bamboo frame with refined details in woven rush and a double opening lid, a solution both practical and aesthetically sophisticated. The arch handle gives vertical thrust to the composition, while the harmonious proportions and the warm tone of the bamboo immediately evoke the sophisticated atmospheres of Italian homes of the mid-century period.
Perfect as a magazine holder, work basket, decorative container, or boho-chic or Italian mid-century modern furniture element, this piece possesses a strong visual impact while maintaining great visual lightness.
The craftsmanship recalls the production of Vittorio Bonacina, the historic Italian manufacturer specialized in bamboo, rush, and rattan furniture, famous for collaborating with some of the most important designers of 20th-century Italy.
Vintage condition: very good and consistent with age and use, with a charming patina of time that enhances authenticity and character.
Dimensions:
* width: 45 cm
* depth: 43 cm
* height: 66 cm
The Vittorio Bonacina manufactory was founded in Lurago d’Erba, in Brianza, within the historic Italian tradition of rush and bamboo processing. Between the 1950s and 1960s the company became one of the main international references of Italian design in natural materials, collaborating with important designers such as Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, Gianfranco Frattini, Ico Parisi, Franca Helg and Renzo Mongiardino.
Many objects in Bonacina’s production of that era did not bear permanent marks or labels; for this reason many bamboo and rush complements are today attributed on the basis of construction technique, materials and style.
The aesthetics of this basket clearly recall the organic and natural language that made Bonacina famous in the postwar period: artisanal weaves, soft lines, and structural lightness typical of the best Italian bamboo design of the mid-century period.
Adequate packaging and traceable shipping throughout Europe.
