Arabic Qur'an folio from Bihar, India, dating to 1425, in the original Bihari script with a gilded Allah and blue rosette verse markers; a single 17 by 25 cm page in good condition, author unknown, containing verses from Medinian chapter 22, al-Hajj, 64–67.
Description from the seller
A exceptional folio in the monumental Bihari script, one of the most distinctive calligraphic traditions of the the Indian sub-contintent, characterised by its bold horizontal strokes and dramatic spatial rhythm. The word Allah is rendered in burnished gold, commanding the eye. Gilded and blue rosette verse markers punctuate the text with jewel-like refinement.
The folio contains scripture from the Medinian chapter 22, al_Hadj (The Pilgrimage), v.64-67, proclaiming the absolute sovereignty of God.
"To Him belongs all this that is in the heavens and on earth.....He has subjected you t o the ships that sailed at His command and holds the sky from falling.....For every nation We have appointed rights".
The Bihari script itself evolved directly from the Classical Arabic scripts of the Abbasid world, most notably Thuluth and Naskh, transplanted to the subcontinent vis the great centres of Islamic learning in Baghdad and Persia. Scribes of the Delhi Sultanate adapted these traditions, elongating the baseline strokes and amplifying the vertical contrast, unmistakably Arabic in its sacred grammar, yet distinctively Indian in its commanding grandeur.
This is a work of profound spiritual and aesthetic authority.
