Description from the seller
Acrylic painting and mixed media on canvas mounted on a wooden frame - Hand-signed - 2026
Signed artwork by Medsan, an artist member of Atelier Joconde, known for its reinterpretations of cultural icons and bold stylistic fusions.
With this original square-format work, Medsan delivers a resolutely modern and transgressive vision of traditional Japan. The painting features a classic figure from Nipponese imagery—a geisha during a ceremony, draped in a sumptuous kimono with dense floral motifs—reimagined with the visual radicality of contemporary urban and cyberpunk culture.
The visual and temporal contrast is striking: clad in a majestic brick-orange kimono adorned with peonies, chrysanthemums, and stylized waves in silver and gold, our geisha gracefully holds her open sensu (folded fan) in a choreography of traditional dance. Her meticulously styled updo, crowned with light wood kanzashi and minute flowers, testifies to the absolute refinement of Edo courtesan craftsmanship. But where her face would appear powdered with nacreous white and crimson lips, a neon blue electric light mask bursts forth instead—simple and icy, as if the geisha’s identity had been absorbed by a digital entity. This luminescent mask, a strong marker of pop rupture, creates a striking contrast with the ornate richness of the millennial costume.
The impact of the canvas largely rests on its solid, deep, theatrical Bordeaux-red background. Painted with acrylics and mixed-media techniques, the canvas features beautiful textural effects and a careful varnished finish. This bold aesthetic, inspired by Pop Art and the cyberpunk movement, explodes the contrasts between the meticulous richness of ukiyo-e and the icy simplicity of contemporary neon. In the upper right, the signature “Medsan” rendered in Japanese (katakana), presented in a red cartouche framed in black in the style of vintage Japanese posters, seals this perfect fusion.
A hand-painted piece with striking charisma. It is ideal for adding a colorful, urban, quirky, and decidedly cyberpunk touch to a design-oriented interior.

About the Studio:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around vibrant, living contemporary creation. Established as a genuine production hub, the studio operates through both collaborative creation and individual approaches, depending on the projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative, introspective body of work influenced by cinema and realism. Alongside him, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo pursues a more instinctive inquiry, blending abstract art, naive art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, realized, and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
