Description from the seller
Jacques Brel – Peter Donkersloot
Giclée
42 x 37 cm
Good condition
In this work Peter Donkersloot pays tribute to the legendary Belgian chanson singer Jacques Brel. Donkersloot does not opt for a traditional portrait, but for a powerful moment of expression. The open mouth, the tense posture and the dramatic light capture the intensity with which Brel performed his songs.
The dark background reinforces the theatrical character of the work and directs all attention to the emotion of the singer. Through the use of warm ocher and brown tones, an almost stage-like atmosphere arises, as if Brel is in the middle of a performance. The painterly quality of the brushstrokes gives the work a lively and personal appearance.
This work is a hand-painted giclée. A giclée is a high-quality art print that is subsequently finished by hand by the artist. This creates a unique combination of reproduction and original painting, with each copy taking on its own character. Donkersloot frequently uses this technique in his portraits of iconic figures from music, film, and cultural history.
