Biography:
Jean-Claude PICOT is a French painter born in 1933. Since 1956, Jean Claude Picot has worked exclusively as a professional artist. He is greatly influenced by the works of the Fauve masters such as Vlaminck, Derain, and Matisse, whose exuberant canvases drew attention in the first decade of the 20th century for their revolutionary use of color, texture, and abstract form. These artists inspired Jean-Claude PICOT for decades, and one can see this influence in his work.
Picot developed a unique style reminiscent of an post-Impressionist application of color, combined with the expressive qualities of form and line. His compositions are often soothing, bearing his personal joie de vivre. He frequently captures the animation, romance, and essence of the landscape as a favorite subject, though he also paints still lifes, urban landscapes, markets, and festival scenes. All of his work is imbued with the same bright, joyful character and is immediately recognizable.
Since 1947, he has exhibited in more than fifty solo exhibitions around the world, including shows in the United States, Belgium, Norway, and Australia. Picot spends part of each year in the south of France and is drawn to the Côte d’Azur—its visitors, its beaches, and its ports full of boats. His work abounds with natural beauty and offers breathtaking panoramic views charged with the unique light of the Mediterranean. Picot works in a post-Impressionist manner, reducing flowers, trees, houses, and figures to their essential forms.
In reviews of Picot’s most recent solo exhibitions in Paris, Bordeaux, and Oslo, critics have noted the affinities between the early 20th-century masters of Impressionism and Fauvism with Picot’s work. Today in the 21st century, Picot continues the tradition of the great French landscape painters.
Picot works actively in many media—oil, acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, ceramics, and more recently silkscreen printing and embellished silkscreen—that beautifully capture his vibrant color and pictorial technique. His work is a favorite among collectors worldwide and is represented in prestigious collections around the world.
