Decorative vintage scoreboard for lawn bowls dating from the 1960s or 1970s, likely from the United Kingdom, weighing just over 3 kg and about 79 cm tall with a base of roughly 30 by 30 cm, featuring a beech frame and a multiplex top, with numbers on flip-able plastic panels showing HOME and AWAY 00–49 and ENDS 00–29.
Description from the seller
Very decorative vintage scoreboard for the sport Lawn Bowls. The board dates from the 1960s or 1970s and is probably from the United Kingdom.
The board weighs just over 3 kg. The height of the board is about 79 cm and the base measures just over 30 cm x 30 cm.
The framing is beech (probably) and the top consists of a multiplex board. With brackets the framing is screwed to the base plate (see photos). The numbers are on plastic plates (probably PVC) that can be flipped. For HOME and AWAY the numbers go from 00 to 49, and for ENDS from 00 to 29.
Lawn bowls is a classic precision sport in which the aim is to roll special, asymmetrical balls (bowls) as close as possible to a small white or yellow target ball (the jack). It resembles the concepts of jeu de boules or curling, but it is always played by rolling on a tightly mowed grass field or artificial turf.
The bowls are not completely round, but with their flat sides they resemble a small cheese. Due to an uneven weight distribution they always roll in a curved line (a bias) rather than straight.
You first roll the jack onto the court. Then you try, in turn, to get your bowls as close as possible to the jack. Only the balls of one team that lie closer to the jack than the closest ball of the opponent count for points (each 1 point). The game can be played individually or in teams of 2, 3 or 4 people (singles, pairs, triples, or fours). Although originally a typical British outdoor sport, you can also play it in other countries.
The board can of course be used as a scoreboard, but it also makes a nice decorative item in a room.
To keep the package compact and to prevent damage during transport, the base plate is unscrewed from the scoreboard with 2 screws. After arrival the board is quickly and easily assembled again.
The board is carefully packed and insured for shipping.
