A rare revolutionary edition, published anonymously but the work of Baron Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach (1723-1789), philosopher, encyclopedist, translator and scientific popularizer, a German who became a naturalized Frenchman.

A materialist and atheist, d'Holbach was a collaborator and financier of Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie, and a prominent figure of the European radical Enlightenment.

In this work he proposes a social ethics that, in its radical immanence, i.e., excluding any remuneration from the afterlife, is founded on strictly utilitarian foundations.
