Description from the seller
Antiek Chinese Card Game (1920) - Bone and Bamboo - 100% complete!
Unique and very rare antique card game from around 1920. A full Western deck (54 cards) in bone and bamboo is rare and in beautiful, undamaged condition with the original brocade box.
Construction: Beautiful, artisanal dovetail joints. No glue used.
Top: Solid stag bone with hand-carved and colored engravings.
Bottom: Natural bamboo with the characteristic grain and end-grain texture.
Unique details: The Jokers are beautifully engraved as traditional Chinese opera figures and the Queens are stylized as Chinese court ladies. The Kings: on the right side the gentlemen join.
They wear intricately inlaid crowns and ceremonial robes. The Jacks: The clothing style of these figures is built from geometric two-tone blocks that recall traditional Western playing cards from the early 20th century, but the cutting technique remains unmistakably Eastern.
