Yousuf Karsh (1908–2002) was an Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer celebrated for some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Working mainly in Ottawa, he became famous for his dramatic lighting and psychologically intense style, photographing figures such as Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, Audrey Hepburn, and Pablo Casals. His 1941 portrait of Churchill, taken just after the British leader’s speech to the Canadian Parliament, became one of the most widely reproduced photographic portraits in history. Karsh’s work combined technical precision with a strong sense of character, helping define modern photographic portraiture. Today, he remains one of the best-known masters of 20th-century photography.
Scilla Gabel (born 1938) is an Italian actress who worked in film, television, and theatre from the 1950s onward. Born Gianfranca Gabellini in Rimini, she first entered the cinema world as Sophia Loren’s stand-in before establishing her own screen career. She became known in the 1950s and 1960s for roles in Italian genre films, including historical adventures, thrillers, and popular commercial productions. Later, she increasingly turned to stage and television work, where she developed a broader and more sustained career. Today, she is remembered as a distinctive presence in postwar Italian cinema.
