About
Gerhard Vormwald (1948–2016) was a German photographer, photographic artist, and professor who became internationally known for his surreal photographic staging. After studying painting, graphics, and photography at the Werkkunstschule Mannheim, he first worked as a stage photographer at the National Theatre Mannheim before opening his own studio in the early 1970s. Vormwald became known for elaborately staged photographs in which people and objects seemingly defy gravity—long before digital image editing. His works appeared on the covers of Stern, Playboy, Zeit Magazin, and Pardon, among others. In 1983 he moved to Paris, where he further developed his distinctive visual language, blending surrealism, staging, and experimental photography. Gerhard Vormwald is considered one of the influential German photographic artists of the 1980s and 1990s and later taught photography as a professor at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.
