The Room of Instinct - XXL
Oil on canvas
120x80
2026
In “The Room of Instinct” the scene unfolds as an ambiguous interior, suspended between the everyday and the perturbing. Two human figures, seen from behind, occupy the space without establishing a direct rapport with the viewer; they seem absorbed in a closed silence, almost indifferent to the animal presence beside them. The monkey, instead, looks straight ahead: it is she who breaks the distance, becoming the true psychological center of the work.
The contrast between the turned figures and the animal’s direct gaze creates a subtle tension. The monkey does not appear merely as a narrative or decorative element, but as an instinctive, primitive presence, perhaps more aware than the humans themselves. Its dark, gathered, heavy body asserts itself in the space as a living mass, while the illuminated face holds an enigmatic, almost questioning expression.
The striped yellow and purple background introduces a theatrical and uncanny dimension. It is not a realistic environment, but a mental wall, a rhythmic surface that amplifies the sense of enclosure and tension. The room thus becomes a symbolic space: not the place of living, but where impulses, repressed presences, and silent relations between human and animal emerge.
“The Room of Instinct” is a work that stages the confrontation between rationality and primal nature. The men turn their backs, the animal observes. In this role reversal lies the painting’s strength: the most direct, more human gaze seems to belong precisely to the instinctive creature.
