Extinct Animals (1905) by the British zoologist Sir E. Ray Lankester is a pioneering work in popular science literature, based on his successful Christmas lectures for the Royal Institution. The richly illustrated book guides the reader on an accessible expedition through paleontology—from recently extinct species such as the dodo to prehistoric giants such as mammoths and dinosaurs. As a convinced Darwinist, Lankester manages to explain, via fossils, the dynamic history of life on Earth and the mechanisms of evolution in a clear, engaging way to a broad audience.
