Description from the seller
Anton Huter (1905-1961)
Self-portrait, 1956
Oil on cardboard.
Rare self-portrait of the Serbian painter Anton Huter (1905-1961), dated 1956 and identified on the back by an old handwritten inscription: “Autoportrait – Anton Huter – 1956.”
Anton Huter was born in Crikvenica in 1905. After living in Trieste, Rijeka and Zemun, he settled in Belgrade where he entered the School of Fine Arts in 1922. Graduating in 1927, he continued his training in Paris in André Lhote’s workshop from 1928 and soon participated in the major exhibitions of the Yugoslav art scene.
A recognized artist in his lifetime, he taught at the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade from 1948 onward. His work covers a wide range of subjects: landscapes, still lifes, portraits, compositions, miniatures and illustrations.
Initially influenced by Expressionism and Cubism, Huter gradually developed a personal style characterized by poetic intimacy, a refined palette and a subtle treatment of light. His work was praised by several art critics and historians, who highlighted its authenticity, sincerity and the deeply personal dimension of his painting.
An important retrospective organized in Belgrade after his death confirmed his place among the leading figures of Serbian painting in the 20th century. His work is today represented in several public and private collections in the Balkans.
The present self-portrait, completed in 1956, belongs to the artist’s mature period. The tightly composed figure, the intensity of the gaze and the generous painterly matter fully attest to his personal artistic language. The visible impasto, the richness of the brushwork and the psychological strength of the model confer a remarkable presence to this work.
The back bears the handwritten inscription:
« Autoportrait – Anton Huter – 1956 »
This note constitutes a particularly interesting documentary element for identifying the work.
Dimensions:
* 26 × 21 cm
Condition:
Cracks, wear and small losses visible due to age. Slight crack in the cardboard support on the right side. Overall good condition.
Work sold with its antique frame.
