Description from the seller
Title Fragments of Liguria
Size: 50 x 40 cm
Technique: Oil on canvas
The work presents itself as a vibrant and sunny coastal view, clearly inspired by the characteristic architecture of the Ligurian seaside villages, such as the Cinque Terre or Portofino. The artist Bruno Bondi orchestrates a composition with a strong vertical development, in which the humanized landscape blends harmoniously with the rugged rock and the Mediterranean vegetation.
The core of the painting consists of a dense cluster of houses-towers that climb along the cliff. The dwellings are rendered through a rigorous geometric decomposition of overlapping and adjacent volumes, creating a dynamic interlocking of terraces and balconies. The perspective, slightly compressed in the foreground, enhances the sense of verticality and urban density typical of villages perched by the sea.
Color is the true protagonist of the canvas. The artist adopts a vivid and saturated palette, dominated by the warm tones of Pompeian reds, ochre yellows, and earth tones, beautifully contrasted by pastel blue facades and deep blue. This chromatic rhythm lights the scene with a zenithal, Mediterranean glow. Architectural details, such as green shutters and small dark frames, punctuate the surface like notes on a score.
The base of the composition is cut through by a jagged cliff, rendered with textural brushstrokes in tones of gray, beige, and brown, brushed by a deep blue sea streaked with white foam. The vertical thrust of the architectures is crowned and softened by dense vegetation: sea pines and shrubs in a bright green frame the village, standing out against a clear sky, crossed by soft white clouds that give atmospheric depth.
Bondi’s style places him in a modern figurative strand, where the oil paint is laid on decisively, cleanly, and geometrically defined, yet maintaining a fresh painterly sensibility in the rendering of lights and shadows. The work conveys a sense of joyful serenity and celebrates the picturesque beauty of the Italian landscape.
