Description from the seller
Pierre Loti — Sailor — Original illustrated edition — Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, April 1893
Sailor is the last volume of Pierre Loti's maritime trilogy (1850-1923), of the Académie Française, after My Brother Yves and Island Fisherman. The novel follows Jean Berny, who enlists as a mere sailor after his failure at the Naval School — a melancholic meditation on the sea and wandering, typical of Loti's universe.
Original edition, printed in April 1893 in the workshops of Edouard Guillaume (Collection Guillaume et Lemerre), published by Alphonse Lemerre, Paris. Only 30 copies were printed on Japon and 30 on Chine, numbered and initialed — the present copy is on edition paper. Adorned with numerous off-text engravings by Myrbach, first printing. Dedicated by Loti to Her Majesty Queen Christine, Regent of Spain, March 1893.
Half-green morocco binding of the period, boards in blue-turquoise marbled paper, spine titled in gold, marbled endpapers. Format in-8°, 19 x 12.5 cm, 270 complete pages.
Condition: interior very fresh, illustrations clear, no annotations. Binding with wear to corners and to the spine. Good overall condition for a 133-year-old copy.
