As a road cyclist, Cavendish turns professional in 2005 and wins 11 races during his first season, thus equalling the record set by Alessandro Petacchi. In 2024, with his 35th stage victory at the Tour de France, he becomes the holder of the record for most Tour de France stage wins, ahead of Eddy Merckx. He also holds a record of four stage wins on the Champs-Élysées, achieved consecutively.
He has won a total of 167 races, including 55 stage wins across the three Grand Tours. He also boasts a world title won at the 2011 road World Championships, making him the second British rider crowned after Tom Simpson in 1965. Among his other notable victories are the famous spring classic Milan-San Remo in 2009 and the points classifications of the three Grand Tours: Vuelta a España 2010, Tour de France 2011 and 2021, and Giro d'Italia 2013. He is among the 26 riders who have worn all three leader jerseys in the Grand Tours.
