Ritratto Borghese, an oil on canvas portrait attributed to Circolo di Giuseppe Tominz (1790–1866) in the Biedermeier style from the XIXth century, measuring 52 by 45 cm in its original frame, signed by hand and in good condition, produced in Italy.
Description from the seller
The painting attributed to Giuseppe Tominz's workshop fits perfectly into the refined, intimate atmosphere of Biedermeier portraiture, of which the artist was one of the most perceptive exponents.
The scene shows a gentleman seated with composed elegance on an upholstered chair, caught in a moment of quiet reflection. The attire is sober yet refined: a dark jacket with clean lines, a light waistcoat, and a perfectly starched shirt, completed by a precisely tied tie. These details are not mere decorative elements, but true indicators of social status, in keeping with a sensibility typical of Tominz, attentive to conveying the dignity and bourgeois role of his subjects.
The face, the focal point of the composition, is rendered with extraordinary psychological finesse. The direct yet measured gaze seems to establish a silent dialogue with the observer, while the light, soft and calibrated, delicately models the features, avoiding dramatic contrasts. It is precisely in this calm and analytical rendering of the expression that one of the most recognizable characteristics of Tominz's style is found: a painting that seeks not emphasis but inner truth.
The right hand, lightly holding a slender object, and the other hand resting hold a small open book, introduce a discreet narrative dimension. The book alludes to the subject's culture and introspection, while the relaxed gesture helps to create a domestic and controlled atmosphere, distant from the official stiffness of a court portrait.
The background, dark and uniform, free of distractions, concentrates attention on the figure, in keeping with a compositional choice that Tominz often adopts to highlight human presence. However, the material quality of the painting's surface and the tonal depth avoid any sense of emptiness, imparting the work with sober elegance.
Overall, the work presents itself as a portrait of balance and restraint, where every element—from the pose to the light, from the clothing to the objects—contributes to constructing an image of bourgeois composure and introspection, perfectly aligned with Giuseppe Tominz's poetic.
Excellent conservation state of the painting, dimensions 52x45 within its original frame provided as a free gift, 41x32 cm the canvas alone.
Accurate packing and shipping are guaranteed.
