De Coene chess set attributed to Christophe Gevers of Belgium, dating from 1950–1960, with abstract geometric wooden pieces on a 38 cm square board and weighing 950 g; in good condition.
Description from the seller
The De Coene chess set attributed to Christophe Gevers from Belgium.
This iconic chess set was designed in the 1950s by the famous Belgian architect and designer Christophe Gevers (1928-2007) and manufactured by the renowned furniture manufacturer De Coene.
As a mid-20th-century modernist masterpiece, the wooden pieces feature abstract geometric forms that simplify traditional chess shapes. They are usually made of precious woods such as teak or rosewood and testify to the exceptional craftsmanship characteristic of De Coene.
The pieces are turned from contrasting wood varieties and reflect Gevers' sensitivity to materials and proportions: cones, cylinders, and subtly varied silhouettes distinguish the rank and function of the pieces with discreet precision.
Their presence on the chessboard is almost sculptural and transforms the game into a landscape of rhythm, balance, and abstraction.
The wooden chessboard itself completes the whole with its clean lines and warm tones, reinforcing the modernist clarity of the game.
On the back, the De Coene monogram can be found.
De Coene has a long tradition of craftsmanship and innovation as a Belgian company in the field of furniture and decorative arts.
Dimensions: 38 cm x 38 cm
Weight: 950 g
Carefully packaged with insurance and a track-and-trace code
