Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Gerstäcker (born May 10, 1816 in Hamburg; died May 31, 1872 in Braunschweig) was a world-renowned German adventure and travel writer of the 19th century. He is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of German crime literature and the adventure novel, whose realistic depictions, among others, inspired Karl May.
