Twelve carved wooden Chinese decorative panels from the 20th century with red lacquer and gilt detailing.
Description from the seller
A fascinating and rare set consisting of 12 Chinese decorative panels in carved wood.
These panels, originally used as architectural elements or parts of traditional furnishings (such as canopy beds or screens), represent a splendid testimony to Chinese artisanal craftsmanship of the period.
Details and Iconography (
Each panel is a work of art in itself, carved in relief with great skill. The decorative motifs are rich in symbolism and include:
Scene of battles and horsemen: Dynamic depictions of warriors and historical or mythological figures on horseback (visible in image_2.png, image_3.png, image_8.png).
Symbols of good omen: Classic floral motifs (including plum blossoms) and naturalistic scenes with birds and aquatic plants, such as the splendid heron among lotus flowers (visible in image_6.png).
Technical aspects and Condition (
The panels feature the classic red lacquer background, enhanced by rich gold leaf gilding (Giltwood) that highlights the details of the carvings.
Conditions: Being authentic antique pieces, the panels show the normal signs of time that attest to their age and historical charm. There are slight natural cracks in the wood, wear to the gilding and surface lacquer, and small structural omissions due to age (as shown in the back details in image_7.png). Overall, the structure is solid and the patina is magnificent.
Dimensions (
Quantity: 12 pieces in total (as shown in the set in image_9.png).
Average dimensions per panel: about 40 × 22 × 2 cm (the precise measurements with a tape measure are visible in image_4.png and image_5.png; note that one panel has a narrower and elongated shape as shown in image_8.png).
