Six wooden Chinese architectural panels, hand-carved and lacquered in dark red with partial gilt, dating from the XX century, origin China, provenance gallery/antique dealer, original/authentic, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Splendid and rare set of Chinese architectural panels in finely carved wood, lacquered in red and decorated with gold leaf (Giltwood).
This lot consists of several traditional decorative elements once used as friezes, window panels, or decorations for daybeds (Opium bed) and high-era antique furniture. The high craftsmanship is evident in the deep, close carving typical of the wood art of southern China (Guangdong/Zhejiang region).
Key Features and Iconography:
Motifs (Opera Scenes): Some panels depict vivid court and theatrical scenes with figures in traditional dress inside pavilions (as visible in image_3.png and image_4.png). The expressions and the details of the clothing are rendered with notable relief.
Symbols of Good Fortune: The pierced corner panels (visible in image_2.png) feature a magnificent pair of Fenghuang (phoenixes), symbols of grace and prosperity, surrounded by floral motifs, fish and crustaceans evoking abundance.
Technique: Hand-carved wood, lacquered in dark cinnabar red and adorned with rich partial gilding that creates a stunning contrast and enhances the piece’s three-dimensionality.
Approximate Dimensions (Based on images with a measuring tape):
Long rectangular panels with high-relief figures (image_8.png): Length about 100-102 cm.
Thickness/Height of a single section of these panels (image_5.png): About 32-33 cm.
Pair of vertical panels with court scenes (image_9.png): Height about 55-56 cm.
Triangular/phoenix-shaped corner panels (image_7.png): Combined total width about 52-53 cm; height of the straight side (image_6.png) about 56 cm.
(Note for collectors: Please refer to the photos with the measuring tape from image_5.png to image_10.png for the exact precision of the dimensions of each piece.)
Conditions (
Original state of preservation (Good overall condition with signs of age).
As these are antique items that adorned historic homes, they feature a beautiful antique patina. Normal signs of wear are visible, small natural cracks in the wood due to age, and partial fading or loss of gold leaf and lacquer that attest to authenticity (please view closely the close-up details in image_4.png). structurally sound, ready to be hung or integrated into an atmospheric interior design project.
