A vintage Louis Vuitton Malle Cabine travel trunk in Damier Canvas with a monogram pattern, dating to the late 19th century, measuring 30 cm high by 90 cm wide and 55 cm deep, in good, clean condition with patina, including the removable interior tray and two keys with a working lock.
Description from the seller
For sale is an original overseas trunk from Louis Vuitton, model Malle Cabine in Damier Canvas. These suitcases were not stored in the cargo hold during sea voyages, but taken up to the passenger’s cabin. Due to its shallow shape, the trunk could be conveniently stored under the bed.
This trunk was covered with the iconic Damier Canvas, which is still found today on many Louis Vuitton handbags. The famous checkerboard pattern was, of course, not mass-produced at the time, but painstakingly applied by hand to the canvas. In some places, the Louis Vuitton marking is integrated into the checkerboard pattern (see photo).
The trunk dates from the late 19th century, and inside there is a very decorative Louis Vuitton label from the 2nd World Exhibition in Paris in 1900.
The trunk is in good and clean condition. It has a very beautiful patina that bears witness to its travels and the last 130 years of history. In the front area there are a hotel sticker from the Merlin Hotel, as well as a travel sticker from the Queen Mary and its former owner. These stickers were once affixed to luggage to help assign the travel luggage to its rightful owner after loading and unloading the ships.
Particularly noteworthy about this trunk is that both the removable inner tray and two keys are still present. The lock closes perfectly.
Today these trunks are a popular interior design piece and a real eye-catcher in any apartment, practice, or office. They are perfect as a coffee table or also at the foot of the bed in the bedroom. Moreover, prices have been rising for years, making these rare pieces a real store of value.
