Description from the seller
An unusual Set of 125 illustrations to Dantes Divine Comedy. These are based on the copper plates of the 4 volume "dell'Ancora" edition of the Divine Comedy produced in Florence in 1817-1819.
This book was issued by the German Dante scholar Bernhard Schuler in 1893, together with a guide to the text of Dante's poem to put the plates in context. Schuler produced a number of works both in German and Italian illustrating and commenting on the Divine Comedy in the late 19th century, when Germany was an important centre for the study of Dante's work.
6 unnumbered pages, 132 text pages and 125 full page plates. Text in Italian linking the plates to the episodes illustrated.
The original binding is chipped and rubbed, the pages show significant browning, yellowing and foxing. The front flyleaf is creased and the staples in the spine show some rust. The plates themselves are mostly clean. See photos.
Former library book with stamp and spine sticker.
