Description from the seller
- Signed V. Tilham
- Medium: Oil on canvas
- Period: second half of the 20th century
- Condition: in very good condition
- Dimensions: 90 x 60 cm (without frame); 112 x 83 cm (with frame)
This 20th-century oil painting, signed by V. Tilham, is a skillfully executed homage to 19th-century Dutch landscape art, painted in the style of Dutch Romanticism. In addition to the atmospheric winter landscape, the impressive handmade decorative frame forms an essential and indispensable part of the artwork for sale.
The artwork presents a nostalgic and idyllic Dutch winter scene that exudes calm and cold. The scene is built up from several traditional elements:
- The central country road: a snowy avenue marked by deep ruts forms the visual axis of the painting. This draws the viewer’s eye deep into the landscape toward a vanishing point in the background.
- Monumental trees: the depiction is dominated by monumental, gnarled oaks on either side of the road. The branches are partly bare and bear here and there the warm, tawny autumn leaves that contrast with the snow.
- Village life (Left): on the left a picturesque village lies hidden under the snow. Prominently present are a characteristic parish church with a pointed spire and an authentic farm. In the foreground there is a wooden shed or water mill at the edge of the path.
- The waterway (Right): on the right side runs a partly frozen channel or river with ice floes, bending along the row of trees.
- Human presence: the landscape is brought to life with small figures in period dress. On the path walks a figure in a dark coat, while closer by a pair of figures (perhaps an elder and a child) stands talking. On the water to the right a helmsman in a wooden boat or rowboat is at work, evoking the daily rural life.
The work is compositionally comparable to the oeuvre of several prominent 19th-century Dutch masters such as Barend Cornelis Koekkoek and Andreas Schelfhout.
The painting is in excellent condition and will be carefully packed for shipping, together with the frame.
