Description from the seller
Fine Italian translation by Antonio Cippico of the important archaeological essay "Herculaneum, past, present and future," written by archaeologist Charles Waldstein and scholar Leonard Shoobridge.
In it the author analyzes the history of the ancient Roman city before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and also documents the early Bourbon discoveries of the eighteenth century achieved through underground tunnels. It also examines the state of abandonment and stalemate in which archaeological investigations stood at the beginning of the twentieth century: many excavations were in fact blocked by the presence of the modern city lying above. Finally, it proposes an ambitious international open-air systematic excavation project. Waldstein suggested the use of new technologies and the support of global funding to overcome the technical limits of the time.
Charles Waldstein - Leonard Shoobridge, Ercolano nel passato, nel presente e nell’avvenire. Versione di A. C.,
Turin, S.T.E.N., 1910.
PP.: XXIII, (I), 339, (I). COMPLETE, with many plates off text, including in color.
Copy with maps in overall good condition. Usual signs of use and age.
Fascinating illustrated hardcover binding in full black cloth, with a few minor defects but solid and still well preserved overall. Front flyleaves white. Red top edge.
