Description from the seller
Buddha
Laos, Provincial Style, 17th-18th century
Late Lan Xang Buddhist art / regional workshops
Bronze
Height: 30 cm (with base)
Very beautiful representation of the Buddha seated in a meditation posture, legs folded. His right hand is lowered toward the ground in the gesture of the Earth Witness (bhumisparsha mudra), symbolizing the victory over Mara's forces, while his left hand rests serenely on his knees, palm facing the sky. The powerful torso shows straight shoulders and a geometric modeling typical of Lao provincial art. The left breast is marked by a prominent protruding nipple in relief. He is dressed in the classic monastic robe, leaving the right shoulder bare, with a broad band of cloth running down in a straight line across the chest and stopping above the belt.
The treatment of the face bears witness to a unique provincial charm and great expressive strength. The features are stylized in a naive yet vigorous manner with large half-closed eyes topped by incised arched eyebrows, a wide and flat nose, and an elongated mouth shaping a kind, serene smile. The ears with stretched lobes almost touch the shoulders. The head is covered with small pointed protuberances symbolizing the hair (ushnisha low, without the traditional upper finial, here missing).
The Buddha rests on a high circular-section throne, flaring downward. The upper part of the base beneath the seat is accentuated by light incised geometric motifs reminiscent of simplified lotus petals. The bell-shaped base shows gaps and old cracks on its lower edge, characteristic of bronzes from this period cast with a thin wall at the base.
Condition:
Piece in its historical worn state, full of character. Remnants of original gilding contrasting superbly with the natural bronze oxidation and its brown patina. Presence of a structural loss at the base of the pedestal (rear and lower side), perfectly stabilized by modern mounting. Traces of mineralization on the bronze.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
