Description from the seller
ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD EXISTS - EDITION 1/1
With this square-format artwork, Medsan signs a visual meditation of rare depth on one of the most poetic philosophies of Japanese culture: kintsugi, the ancient art of repairing broken porcelain with gold lacquer, turning cracks into precious scars rather than hiding imperfection. This singular print features an iconic geisha — ivory-powdered face, carmine lips, ebony hair with blue-tinged highlights, deftly styled in a traditional chignon adorned with golden kanzashi and tiny flowers — painted on what appears to be a fragment of precious ceramic once broken and repaired by the millennial art of kintsugi.
The magic of the composition lies in this striking double reading. The courtesan, draped in a sumptuous Prussian blue kimono adorned with floral motifs — chrysanthemums, red petals and stylized waves in ukiyo-e style — unfurls a golden sensu fan with delicate water illustrations, a posture of infinite grace. But the whole scene is traversed by broad veins of gold that run across the image like the precious veins of a restored porcelain — these golden cracks of kintsugi do not disfigure the portrait; they elevate it, silently telling the story of a beauty that has known fracture, loss, and is now magnified by it. The fine, pervasive craquelure of the ivory background, reminiscent of patina on centuries-old ceramics, adds a vertiginous temporal dimension to the work.
The impact of the composition is magistrally highlighted by a painterly treatment inspired by Sumida porcelain, Hokusai’s prints, and the Zen philosophy of wabi-sabi which celebrates beauty in imperfection. The restrained, refined palette — deep indigo blues, ivory white of ancient ceramics, vermilion reds for details, and above all the sumptuous gold of kintsugi veins — creates an atmosphere of rare elegance, straddling the line between an antique art object and a contemporary work. The fusion between traditional geisha iconography and the repairing philosophy of kintsugi yields a deeply symbolic piece — a meditation on resilience, on accepting life’s breaks, and on how our scars become our most beautiful adornments when we learn to view them as gold rather than wounds.
A conceptual piece, at once aesthetic, philosophical, and profoundly touching, ideal for adding a touch of Eastern elegance, Zen spirituality, and symbolic refinement to a design-conscious, contemporary interior. It is also a work that speaks directly to all who have faced trials and know that their wounds have made them more precious still.

About the Atelier:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around a living, plural contemporary creation. Established as a true artistic production space, the workshop operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative, introspective work with cinematic and realist influences. By his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive pursuit, blending abstract art, art brut, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, realized, and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
