Grand Prestige Ashanti Comb (Akan Art, Ghana) – 52 cm
Description:
A traditional prestige comb, a single imposing piece of African sculpture with great delicacy. Originating from West Africa (Ashanti/Akan style), this type of object is not only utilitarian but historically served as a rank insignia or a symbolic wedding gift.
Detailed features:
• Origin: West Africa (Ghana / Ivory Coast).
• Material: Solid monoxylous wood (carved from a single block) with a beautiful dark, satin patina.
• Dimensions: Exceptional height of 52 cm, making it a very visual wall decoration or display piece.
• Iconography: * The upper part presents a complex scene: a human figure lying down supporting a ceremonial boat.
• In the center of the boat, a finely carved head is framed by two curved symbolic elements.
• The handle is adorned with geometric motifs carved and an interlace symbolizing unity and strength (typical Akan art motifs).
• Number of teeth: 10 tapered and sturdy teeth.
Condition:
The object is in good overall display condition. Note a discreet ancient consolidation at the level of the neck of the central figure, testifying to its authenticity and history. The teeth are intact.
