Description from the seller
David Roberts (1796-1864). In 1838, over two and a half months, traveling about 1,280 kilometers south of Cairo, Roberts documented the sites of the monumental temple ruins along the Nile in more than one hundred sketches. As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt, located in “vast plains... that, until one approaches them, one has no idea of their magnificence,” Roberts was very aware of the stir his drawings would cause in London, Roberts’s drawings “were the first carefully executed studies by an English painter, not to display his own skill, but to faithfully portray scenes of historical interest." The Ramesseum is an ancient temple complex located in Luxor, Egypt, built by Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BC. This mortuary temple was designed so that Ramses II would be worshiped after his death. The complex is located in the Theban Necropolis, on the western bank of the Nile opposite the city of Luxor. In addition to the main temple, there is also a small temple dedicated to his mother Tuya. Dimensions: 29.2 centimeters × 39.3 centimeters.
