Description from the seller
Splendid and imposing antique walnut wood coffer in its original form, dating from the mid-19th century (circa 1830-1850), crafted in full Carlo X / Louis-Philippe style. This refined piece stands out for its unusually generous dimensions and its substantial weight of 3,100 kg, features that bring it close to the rare travel or private archive caskets used in the 19th century to store documents, correspondence and personal valuables.
The structure presents an elegant sarcophagus- or pagoda-style silhouette, characterized by a domed and flared lid and a solid moulded base. On the top there is a movable metal handle in burnished finish for transport, while on the front the refined original lock throat stands out, finely worked with delicate floral motifs.
The interior, extraordinarily well preserved, is finished in natural wood exposed, and is complete with its upper removable tray, divided into three practical compartments. The lid is secured by sturdy brass hinges and equipped with a stop-cord.
An element of particular interest is the large brass snap lock, perfectly functional and complete with its original key, an extremely rare and sought-after detail in objects of this era.
Our interior designer/architect recommends it as: ideal as a decorative element in professional study rooms, libraries, gentleman’s club settings, elegant country houses or interiors with English and eclectic taste. Also perfect as a refined scenographic container for ancient documents, collections, jewelry or desk objects.
The piece is presented in good conservational condition, with a splendid antique patina and slight signs of aging consistent with its age, authentic testimony to its history. Structure is perfectly solid and sound, with no missing parts.
Dimensions: 46.5 cm x 25 cm x 30 cm
Weight: 3,100 kg
