Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (1884–1965), better known under the acronym GAN, was a groundbreaking Swedish modernist artist and writer. He is regarded as a pioneer of cubism, futurism and surrealism in Sweden, famous for his dynamic, homoerotic and maritime themes.
Life and Art
Born in Lund. After his studies in Copenhagen he traveled to Berlin in 1913. Here he was deeply influenced by expressionism, cubism and futurism, among others by the work of Wassily Kandinsky.
Style: His work fluidly ranges between diverse avant-garde movements. He is especially iconic for his paintings of sailors, athletes, machines and religious motifs.
Period in Paris:
Because his radical work in Sweden received much criticism, he moved in 1920 to Paris, where he lived in the same building as Fernand Léger. In the 1920s he introduced surrealism in Sweden.
Cultural HeritageIn addition to painting he wrote poems and children's books. His legacy is well documented. His work is represented in leading Swedish museums, such as the Moderna Museet and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and the Malmö Art Museum.
