Description from the seller
The Iliads of Homer, Prince of Greek Poets or Description of the War between the Greeks and Trojans, about the abduction and removal of Helen - Amsterdam, Jan rieuwersz, 1658 - (24) 454 pp - Part 1 (of 2) parchment-bound
Fairly good. Crease on the spine. Edges of the front cover, the first two gatherings and the edges of pages 23/24 as well as the top and side edge engraved title page slightly frayed. Play/looseness in quires up to page 25 (tied to cords). Page 1/2 loose. Tear in the first flyleaf, about 3 cm. Interior browned; here and there a spot, (very) light damp stain in the inner, lower and/or upper margin of about one third of the pages. Some foxing. Inner margin in places open – the book block fixed in the binding. Small tear, about 0.5 cm, in the margin of three leaves; loss of corner on two leaves; notch of margin on three leaves.
Contains an engraved title page and 12 engravings – all depicted
This book from 1658 concerns the first edition of the first part (books 1 through 12) of The Iliad of Homer, translated into Dutch by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker and published by Jan Rieuwertsz. The epic describes the Trojan War, the quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles, and the fighting around the city of Troy. Notably, Glazemaker wrote this translation in prose and that Part 2 (books 13 through 24) had already appeared earlier, namely in 1654. This 1658 edition completed the work.
