Description from the seller
Rubens Capaldo (1908-1987) – "Female Nude Seated" – Tempera on Canvas
This refined work with great expressive force is signed by Rubens Capaldo (Paris, 1908 – Naples, 1987), one of the most cultured, original, and international figures of Neapolitan painting in the twentieth century. Born in Paris but trained and established in Naples (where he was also esteemed as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts), Capaldo mastered the marrying of the grand Neapolitan figurative tradition with the French avant-gardes of the early century. His oeuvre is renowned for extraordinary color sensibility and a deep psychological investigation of the human figure, elements that make him a highly sought-after author among collectors of Italian twentieth-century art, also because he could express himself with meticulous precision thanks to his early activity as a ceramist.
The painting tackles one of Capaldo’s most iconic and joyful themes: the female nude. The figure is depicted in a classical seated pose, characterized by accentuated, sculptural volumes that recall the solidity of the anatomical form. Executed in tempera on canvas, the work stands out for its vibrant and fleshy use of color. Capaldo lays down the painted matter with quick, juxtaposed strokes, creating an enchanting chromatic play that shifts where warm flesh tones dialog with cool nuances, emerging from a dark, enveloping background. It is precisely this handling of light that gives prominence and three-dimensionality to the body.
The work bears the artist’s autograph signature "Capaldo R." on the front. Artist: Rubens Capaldo (Paris, 1908 – Naples, 1987). Title of the Work: "Nudo" (Female Nude Seated). Technique: Tempera on canvas. Era: 20th Century. School: Neapolitan Avant-Garde Painting of the Twentieth Century. Signature: Handwritten on the front.
The work is presented in good overall condition, preserving the brightness and intensity of the original paint film. Being a historical painting, the surface shows some small, physiological signs of time, as carefully highlighted in the accompanying detailed photographs. This patina attests to its authenticity and historicity. Note for bidders: Please examine carefully the rich attached photographic gallery, which forms an integral part of the description of the lot’s condition. It has no frame.
I guarantee logistics to the highest standards. Tracked Shipping: Entrusted exclusively to a leading international express courier, with a tracking code provided immediately after departure.
