Oil on canvas titled Village aux fleurs from the Catalan post‑impressionist school, circa 1950–1960, from Spain, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Oil on canvas attributed to the Catalan school of the 1950s. The work depicts an urban view with a Mediterranean character, with whitewashed houses, popular architecture, terracotta tile roofs, an arch, and flourishing vegetation in the foreground.
The composition is organized around a street or open space that guides the eye toward the architectural ensemble, creating a serene and luminous scene. The treatment of the façades stands out, using whites, grays, ochres and earth tones, contrasted with the warmth of the reddish roofs and the chromatic intensity of the flowers and vegetation.
The brushwork is loose, thick, and evidently painterly, with visible material that adds texture and vibrancy to the surface. The style can be linked to Catalan landscape painting of the mid-20th century, especially village painting and Mediterranean landscapes, with influences from Post-Impressionism, luminism, and the Catalan landscape tradition. The work does not seek a photographic description of the place, but a sensitive interpretation of the atmosphere, the light, and popular architecture.
It is especially interesting the balance between architectural construction and painterly spontaneity: the houses and the arch maintain a recognizable structure, while the vegetation and the effects of light are resolved with greater freedom, through agile and blended brushstrokes. The overall effect conveys a friendly, bright, and typically Mediterranean atmosphere.
A work with a pleasant visual presence, suitable for collectors of Catalan painting, urban landscape, village views, and Spanish painting of the mid-20th century.
The canvas shows signs of woodworm, which has been treated. This aspect is stated expressly for proper appraisal. The frame is included as a gift, so it does not form part of the main valuation of the work.
It is recommended to examine the photographs carefully, as they are an essential part of the description and allow an accurate assessment of the conservation state of the work, the stretcher, and the frame.
