Norwegian Folk Art Bridal / Celebration Box – Named “Sigfrid Høiby” – Dated 1915 – Large Hand-Painted Wooden Storage Box

A rare and highly decorative Norwegian folk art storage box, hand-painted and dated 1915, bearing the name “Sigfrid Høiby” and likely created for or associated with an important life event in the owner’s early adulthood.

The box belongs to the Scandinavian tradition of painted domestic storage containers often referred to as bridal, celebration, or household boxes. Comparable Norwegian examples were used to store festive baked goods, cakes, confectionery, textiles, and treasured household items, and frequently remained within the family for generations. Historical museum references describe similar painted boxes (tine/bride boxes) as containers used for storing and transporting food, fabrics, and household possessions, often decorated to commemorate a significant occasion.

The present example is particularly appealing due to its large circular form, personal inscription, and original folk-art decoration. The name Sigfrid Høiby and the date 1915 are painted directly onto the object. Research indicates that Sigfrid Høiby (1896–1976) was approximately nineteen years old in 1915, supporting the possibility that the box was associated with a milestone such as confirmation, engagement, establishment of a household, or another important family celebration.

The hand-painted decoration differs from traditional rosemaling and instead features a striking radial floral motif on the lid together with stylized leaves and botanical ornaments around the body.
