Description from the seller
Three rare original costume designs in watercolor and gouache on toned paper, dating from roughly the 1960s to early 1970s.
The works depict elegant, masked female figures in elaborately designed theater or operetta costumes. The designs are distinguished by expressive color handling, a loose brushwork, and the detailed rendering of the costumes.
According to the accompanying short appraisal, the three sheets appear to have been executed stylistically by the same hand and are probably attributed to the Berlin artist Werner Reifarth (1919–1977). However, a final attribution could not be conclusively confirmed.
The expert assumes that the works may have originated in connection with an opera or operetta production and served as templates for the creation of stage costumes.
