Description from the seller
Zenith pocket watch for Van Arcken & Co, Batavia & Soerabaja – ca. 1900
Offered is a particularly distinctive and rare pocket watch from the colonial period of the Dutch East Indies. This Swiss Zenith timepiece was supplied by Van Arcken & Co, a leading jewellers and clock trade with branches in Batavia and Soerabaja.
The watch features a white enamel dial with Arabic numerals and a small seconds hand at six o’clock. The mechanical movement is signed Zenith, a manufacturer that gained international reputation around the turn of the century and was awarded a Grand Prix at the Paris World Exposition in 1900, a reference also found on the inner side of the dust cap.
Beyond the quality of the Swiss movement, this example is distinguished by the historic signature of Van Arcken & Co. Watches supplied for the Dutch East Indies market are considerably rarer than comparable European editions and are sought after by collectors of antique watches as well as colonial memorabilia.
The case bears several hallmarks. The movement appears complete and original. The dial is in neat condition for its age. The crystal shows a small flaw. General signs of wear are present, entirely in keeping with an object over a century old.
An attractive collector’s item that fuses Swiss watchmaking with a tangible piece of Dutch East Indies history.
