Description from the seller
PAIR OF ASYMMETRICAL CANDLESTICKS WITH PUTTI FIGURES
Style: Historicist / Neobaroque (Inspiration from European palace art of the 17th and 18th centuries).
Era: Late 19th century to mid-20th century.
Material: Cast metal with aged patina of solid bronze.
Composition: Pair for desktop use, complementary design with asymmetrical heights.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
Exquisite pair of individual classical-style candlesticks, characterized by an elegant structural asymmetry that gives the set a dynamic and unique character. Both pieces use the human figure as the central axis, resorting to the classical iconography of the putto or cherub as the supporting element.
Majestic Candlestick (Stylized):
Features a slender, taller silhouette. The cherub figure is shown in a dynamic pose, resting on an ornate lower shaft with vegetal motifs and grooved reliefs. The ensemble is crowned by a spectacular base of organic inspiration, carved in the shape of extended acanthus leaves with a multi-point starry profile. The upper inkwell includes a flared dish for collecting wax.
Smaller Candlestick (Compact):
With more robust proportions and lower height, this model shows the cherub in a classical Atlas-like pose, supporting the weight of the upper inkwell directly with both arms raised. The figure connects almost immediately to a wide tripodal base, richly decorated with volutes and Rococo-style reliefs, which rests firmly on three ornate feet.
CONDITION REPORT:
The stylized candlestick is clean and shows excellent definition in the reliefs of the foundry, as well as a dark patina very well distributed that highlights the piece’s volumes. The smaller candlestick presents an intense organic accumulation of melted candle wax cascading along its left side and base; this element, far from a defect, gives the piece a marked bohemian, romantic, and period character (the wax is easily removable if you wish to restore the metal to its original state). No fractures or structural missing parts are evident at first glance.
