Arctic explorations in the years 1853, '54, '55: The second Grinnell Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin - 2-volume set - by Elisha Kent Kane. Decorative, relief-printed linen binding with image of a ship trapped in the ice, gilt inscription. More than 300 engravings from sketches by the author. Fold-out map part 1 and fold-out 'average, monthly and thermometric lines of Baffin Bay' part 2. Published by Childs and Peterson, Philadelphia, 1857. The second Grinnell Expedition of 1853-1855 was an American undertaking, funded by Henry Grinnell, to uncover the fate of Franklin's lost expedition. Led by Elisha Kent Kane, the team explored areas northwest of Greenland, now called Grinnell Land. "Very good condition for its age, light wear to the cloth, a tear in the page (no illustration) and in the map, interior clean and sturdy, some stains and foxing."
