The main author of the entire section was the jurist and philosopher Pierre Louis de Lacretelle, who was responsible for all four volumes. The volumes appeared in the years 1786 (Vol. 1), 1788 (Vol. 2) and up to 1791 (Vols. 3–4), in the characteristic quarto format with two-column text. Content-wise, the four volumes cover the entire spectrum of contemporary philosophy: logic, epistemology, metaphysics, and morality – organized according to the principles of the Enlightenment and in critical engagement with the scholastic tradition.
