Description from the seller
[FIRST EDITION, LOGIC, METAPHYSICS]
Diderot, Denis / d'Alembert, Jean le Rond (eds.) – Encyclopédie méthodique. Logic and Metaphysics. 4 volumes in 4 books. Paris, Panckoucke / Liège, Plomteux, 1786–1791. – First edition.
The Encyclopédie méthodique. Logic and Metaphysics is the section dedicated to the field of philosophy within the great thematically reorganized reworking of the Encyclopédie by Diderot and d'Alembert, edited from 1782 by the Parisian publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke. The present exemplar in four volumes represents the first edition, issued simultaneously by Panckoucke in Paris and Plomteux in Liège. The main author of the entire section was the jurist and philosopher Pierre Louis de Lacretelle, who was responsible for all four volumes. The volumes appeared in the years 1786 (Vol. 1), 1788 (Vol. 2) and up to 1791 (Vols. 3–4), in the characteristic quarto format with two-column text. Content-wise, the four volumes cover the entire spectrum of contemporary philosophy: logic, epistemology, metaphysics, and morality – organized according to the principles of the Enlightenment and in critical engagement with the scholastic tradition. The work thus stands at the transition between pre-revolutionary scholarly culture and modern philosophical thinking, and documents the Enlightenment claim to systematically assert reason as the supreme organizing principle even in philosophy.
