Antique rimless pince-nez glasses in their original folding case.Item DetailsType: Pince-nez (from the French pincer, meaning to pinch, and nez, meaning nose) are eyeglasses without earpieces that are held on the nose by a spring that clamps the bridge of the nose. Two pairs are visible in the photograph: one is in the case, the other is in front of it.Period: Late 19th - early 20th century (Edwardian / Victorian era, circa 1890-1920).Details: The glasses feature fine gilt (or gold-filled) hardware and a safety chain. The chain was attached to clothing or hair with a special pin to prevent breakage if the glasses accidentally fell from the nose.Case: A hard, original shell-type case with a velvet or fabric lining inside. A sticker with the registration number (Reg. No. 23734) remains on the inside of the lid, promising a reward to the finder if the glasses are lost. Two pairs are available: one with a case, 9k gold frames, tested, and the other without a case, 12k gold plated.
