Description from the seller

Introduction

This auction presents an antique Japanese mechanical pocket watch with a movement marked “SKS”, associated with Seikosha, one of Japan’s important early watchmaking names.

The watch comes with its original-style storage case and a period chain/strap with Japanese commemorative inscriptions. The inscription appears to relate to a commemorative occasion connected with Her Majesty the Empress during the Taisho period, although some characters are worn and cannot be fully confirmed. The reverse side of the attached medal-like plate appears to include a date around March 20, Taisho 11, but the final character is difficult to read clearly.

This is an interesting historical Japanese timepiece, best suited for collectors of Japanese horology, Seikosha-related items, Taisho period memorabilia, or restoration projects.

Historical / Era context

Seikosha played an important role in the development of Japanese watchmaking before and during the early 20th century. This pocket watch reflects the period when mechanical pocket watches were still widely used and valued as practical and commemorative objects.

The presence of the SKS marking on the movement, the Japanese inscription inside the case back, and the commemorative chain/strap give this piece a strong historical character. It is especially appealing as a Japanese antique object rather than simply as a functional timekeeper.

Condition

Important note: The watch is not in working order.

The crown can only be turned counterclockwise. When the angle of the watch is changed, the movement may start briefly or move slightly, but it does not run properly. Please consider this watch as a non-working collectible item for display, study, or repair/restoration.

Case: The metal case shows visible signs of age, including scratches, surface wear, small marks, discoloration and age-related patina. There are also areas of wear around the bezel and case edges. Please check the photos carefully.

Dial: The white dial has a classic Arabic numeral layout with a small seconds sub-dial. The dial shows age-related marks, small stains and signs of vintage use, but the overall design remains clearly visible.

Crystal: The crystal shows visible scratches and age-related wear.

Movement: Mechanical movement marked “SKS” and “15 Jewels”. The movement is currently not functioning properly and should be regarded as requiring service or repair.

Case back: There is an inscription inside the case back. Please refer to the photographs for the exact details.

Accessories: The watch comes with a storage case and a chain/strap. The chain/strap includes a commemorative medal-like plate with Japanese inscriptions. The surface inscription appears to relate to a Taisho-period commemorative item connected with Her Majesty the Empress, but due to wear, the full text cannot be confirmed. The reverse side appears to show a date around March 20, Taisho 11, although the final character is unclear. The storage case itself shows noticeable aging, discoloration, stains and wear.
