Description from the seller
Studio Pottery Lamp Base – Signed 正秀作 (Masahide / Seishū) – Oxblood Flambé Glaze – 65 cm – Mid-20th Century
Large and impressive studio pottery lamp base featuring a rich oxblood (sang-de-boeuf / flambé) glaze with dramatic transitions from deep crimson red to ivory white.
The ceramic body is of substantial weight and displays characteristics associated with hand-thrown and hand-glazed studio pottery. The underside bears the Japanese inscription:
正秀作
which may be read as Masahide-saku or Seishū-saku, translating approximately to “made by Masahide” or “work of Seishū”. The exact attribution remains unconfirmed.
The lamp originates from a family collection with documented historical ties to Japan, where family members lived for extended periods during the mid-20th century. The original owner was a priest, artist and art enthusiast with a long-standing interest in Asian art and culture.
The deep red glaze, pronounced craquelure and sculptural form are highly reminiscent of Japanese studio pottery traditions influenced by classical sang-de-boeuf and flambé glazes.
Dimensions
* Height: 65 cm
* Width: 15 cm
* Depth: 15 cm
